According to an article published in Metro: A new study shows that eating a handful of almonds daily may significantly enhance gut health.

The King's College London study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that the typical, highly processed Western diet is not conducive to gut health, which can be affected, not just by what we eat, but how we eat.

But having a healthy gut is vital and has been linked to reduced anxiety and a lower risk of diabetes and inflammation. That's why eating foods rich in fat, such as avocados, and healthy bacteria from foods such as yoghurt and fibre from fruits and vegetables is important.

And now, almonds can be added to that list that promotes gut health, as the study found that eating a handful of almonds every day promotes regular bowel movements throughout the week.

This is because almonds, which contain fats, fibre and polyphenols, increase the production of butyrate, a fatty acid that promotes intestinal health by enhancing intestinal transit time (the amount of time it takes for food to travel through the intestines), maintaining colon health, and functioning as a source of fuel for cells in the large intestine, it regulates the absorption of other nutrients in the intestine and contributes to supporting a balanced immune system.

The study, funded by the California Almond Growers Council, involved 87 healthy adults who consumed low amounts of fibre and snacked on processed foods such as chocolate and chips.

They were divided into three groups: one group replaced their daily snacks with 56g of whole almonds, another ate 56g of ground almonds, and the comparison group ate pancakes with the same number of almond calories.

And those who ate whole and ground almonds had a higher level of butyrate in the gut and more potassium.

Whole almonds have also been linked to regular bowel movements, suggesting that they can help with constipation.
